About Me

I am Cameron Olson, purebred Limousin and Beefmaster breeder, 4-H member, and a brand-spankin’ new admit to Texas A&M University starting fall 2011. I live southeast of Calgary on a farm owned by my family, where we raise some cattle, Cain, and hay. Thank you for reading my blog, My Cattle World.

My family and I moved out to our farm in 2002, to care for my ill grandmother and with the intention of raising cattle. After nine years of hard work, blood and some well-chosen words (inappropriate to repeat here), fencing and corrals have been built, barns have been moved, hay equipment has been bought, sold and thrown away, a new house has been built, and cattle have been moved in. I started my first year of 4-H in 2002, building a model train set (ya, I was a multi kid) and then moved on to a market steer the year after. Since then my passion has been with cattle, so much so that it is the lifestyle I have chosen to learn at Texas A&M University. The past eight years have been a whirlwind of excitement and education, as an urban city kid learned the ropes of the cattle industry. Good days far out way the bad days here, regardless of weather or markets. I am so glad that I have found something I enjoy so much and can so easily turn into a career. Cattle have been a part of my life for eight years, and hopefully will continue to be for the next eighty (assuming I live that long).

This blog was started as a small part of a very large competition. It comprises the marketing aspect of my Summer Synergy entry, counting for a part of my overall aggregate score. This score is tabulated on many parts of the event, including multi-species judging, showmanship, Show Team Judging, and conformation. It places me in the running for one of many $2000 or $1000 scholarships presented by the Calgary Stampede and Associated Sponsors (Thanks Everyone!). Perhaps most importantly, however, it allows me to share my views about agriculture with the general public, through a process that is known as Agvocacy. There has been an increased movement toward using technology such as the internet to spread the positive about agriculture, instead of just the negative (which there isn't much of, believe it or not). I have found that I enjoy blogging about agriculture, and I plan to continue My Cattle World as I move forward in life. Thanks for taking the time to read about me and my adventures in agriculture, and as I have heard so many times before, please continue to live life and love your cattle (both in the pasture and on the plate).

Cheers,

Cameron Olson
