As promised, here are some pictures of Costa Rican beef cattle. As you can see, body condition is not what we as Canadians like to see on our cattle, and there are definitely some structural issues. This was a small group high in the mountains on the Pacific side of the country.
Keeping in mind that it is the end of the dry season in northern tropical climates, and these animals have probably been short of feed for a month or so. I found that the higher we were the dryer it appeared, and pastures were quite short at this point in the year. However, down closer to sea level the humidity kept things green, even if they were no longer growing.
The cattle in Costa Rica would no doubt perform very well if placed in a more controlled environment like the southern United States, where grain and money keep cattle in condition through the toughest parts of the year. Overall, I found that the trip opened my eyes a little bit more to how fortunate we are to have the quality of cattle we do.
